Each congregation of the churches of Christ is autonomous and functions independently. There is no organization beyond the local churches. We have no creed other than the Bible and prefer to be identified merely as Christians.
In America, the churches of Christ are the result of believers with a wide range of religious backgrounds coming together in what was then a wilderness. To worship, they found that they needed each other more than they needed the religious traditions brought with them. One by one, in many different places, Christians came to realize that they could accept one another based on their belief God, of his son, Jesus Christ, comfort of the Holy Spirit, and the knowledge found in the Scriptures. They realized that the creeds and doctrines of men held them apart. Holding to the Bible as their only basis of doctrine would hold them together.
The time (early 1800's) was called "The Great Awakening" because so many people turned to Jesus Christ. The movement "The Restoration Movement" because its theme was to restore Christianity to the model found in the New Testament time of the Apostles.
When you visit our services (and we hope you do!) you might notice a few things that are different:
We sing A Capella. A Capella is Latin for "as in church" and denotes vocal singing without instrumental accompaniment. Singing is very, very special to us.
Because there is no organization or authority beyond the local congregation, we have no creed or written statement of doctrine other than the Bible itself.
